🚗 Popular Vehicles for Export

🚗 Popular Vehicles for Export picture

Not every vehicle suits every route. Buyers exporting from South Africa tend to choose based on the roads they'll be driving once they get home, how easily the vehicle can be serviced locally, and what it'll be used for day to day — work, family travel, or both. Here's how the main categories stack up.

Bakkies (Double Cabs)

The most requested category among SADC export buyers, and for good reason — a double cab bakkie handles unpaved and rural roads well while still doubling as a comfortable daily driver. They're a strong fit for buyers heading to Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Mozambique, where road conditions outside major towns are a real factor. Bakkies also tend to have the widest parts and mechanic availability across the region, which matters more for long-term running costs than the purchase price alone.

SUVs

For buyers prioritising comfort over long highway distances — common among buyers travelling to Botswana and Namibia — a mid-to-large SUV is often the better choice. They offer more passenger comfort than a bakkie on tar roads, while still coping reasonably well with gravel and rougher stretches when needed.

Sedans

Sedans remain a practical, budget-friendly choice for buyers who'll mostly be driving on paved roads — typically city and highway use rather than rural terrain. They're usually the most fuel-efficient option of the three categories and often the lowest-cost to purchase and maintain.

Choosing between them

If you're unsure which category suits your situation, the honest answer usually comes down to two questions: what do the roads look like where you're headed, and will the vehicle be doing double duty for work as well as personal use? We talk through both with every export buyer before recommending specific models.
